WHIDBEY GENERAL HOSPITAL SEEKS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM PROPERTY OWNERS

KWPA had Whidbey General Hospital CEO, Tom Tomasino and CFO, Joe Vessey in the studio on March 7th for an interview about the up coming – MAIL IN ONLY – special ballot for the 50 million dollar bond the hospital is seeking from the property owners of Whidbey.

The interview will re-air on KWPA on Thursday – March 11th at 4pm – from 96.9fm around Penn Cove and streamed from the KWPA “listen” page.

IN and effort to help the citizen’s of Whidbey get as much information as possible about this bond, KWPA will be airing this interview with Tom Tomasino and Joe Vessey repeatedly over the weeks leading up to the May 17th vote.  Gwen will inform you of the days and times – on Monday – March 14th.

WHIDBEY GENERAL HOSPITAL 50 Million dollar BOND

Whidbey General Hospital CEO Tom Tomasino and his CFO Joe Vessey joined Harry Anderson and Gwen in the KWPA studio for an interview about the upcoming 50 Bond Whidbey General is seeking from voters.

The special ballot (MAIL IN ONLY) will take place on May 17, and looks to be very important to the future of health care on Whidbey Island, so says CEO Tomasino and those who are in favor of the bond.  The bond will add pennies to your property tax – but none the less some voters are asking a lot of questions.

Harry Anderson took the roll of host for this interview, which aired lived today at 11am.  The interview will rebroadcast on 96.9 FM around Penn Cove or streamed over your computer from the KWPA website – on Thursday – March 10 at 9am and Friday March 11 at 4pm.  After that the interview will appear on the KWPA schedule weekly and be available as a podcast on the KWPA site.  KWPA hopes this interview will help the property owners of Whidbey Island be sufficiently informed prior to the special election on May 17th

Several community meetings have been planned in the coming weeks to help inform citizens of the bond.  WGH’s strategic plan calls for replacing the hospital’s 40 year old inpatient wing. EBEY BOWL WINS THE 2011 PENN COVE MUSSEL FEST MUSSEL CHOWDER CONTEST

Look out old timer eateries in Coupeville, for the second year running, a brand new business WON the MUSSEL CHOWDER CONTEST!

Ebey Bowl, located at 1203 W Terry Road in Coupeville, made the best chowder and has raised the bar for the 2012 Penn Cove Mussel Fest.  Last year the 2010 mussel chowder winner was Mosquito Fleet on Front St. in Coupeville.

Matt and Heidi Iverson and Mimi and Scott Johnson, owners of Ebey Bowl – will surely be fielding tons of congratulatory phone calls, emails and visitors today – giving them no time to rest after a whirl wind Mussel Fest weekend.

When asked, by Gwen, at the Mussel Mingle, Friday night, what he had planned for his chowder entry, Matt Iverson said he had no idea what he was doing – but he was confident it would be delicious and he was not worried”.  Looks like his confidence paid off!

WSU Extension Island County Master Gardeners and the Graham Kerr Tease

WSU Extension Master Gardener’s Join Gwen

Today on KWPA’s Whidbey Chat, Gwen hosted Island County Master Gardener’s Marcia Nelson and Carolyn Mercer, for a conversation about the Washington State University Extension’s Master Gardener program, how it to get involved, what they do as Master Gardeners, and their upcoming annual Whidbey Gardening Workshop 2011.

During the interview, Gwen found out that the Master Gardener’s program was founded in Washington state, that any Master Gardener program you’ll find in this country can be directly related back to our own state.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Extension office to extend information throughout their community. The first Master Gardener program was started in Washington State in 1973. Master Gardeners provide only research-based information, giving the public accurate and tested answers to their questions.

Since joining Master Gardener’s in 2003, Carolyn has enjoyed the education the program requires, the interaction it provides her with the community and the valuable experiences it has brought to her life here on Whidbey.  Likewise Marcia, a Master Gardener since 2001, has fully embraced the program and all that it brought to her life.

Both are fully involved in the upcoming 2011 Whidbey Gardening Workshop, taking place at the Coupeville Middle/High School, March 19, from 9am to 3:30pm.  With over 60 classes to choose from, the event is open to the public at the cost of 35.00, and an additional 8.00 if you’d like to purchase lunch.   Excitedly Carolyn and Marcia shared that their keynote speaker for the event will be Graham Kerr of Galloping Gourmet fame.

Graham Kerr was born in London and grew up around some of the finest chefs in Europe.  He is the author of over 20 cookbooks. His newest, Growing at the Speed of Life, reflects his transition from cooking highly caloric gourmet foods to adopting and promoting a healthier lifestyle that features flavorful lower calorie diets and sustainable living.  Graham and his wife, Treena, live in Mt. Vernon where he grows his own food in a kitchen garden, the inspiration for his new book. Autographed copies of Growing at the Speed of Life can be purchased at the workshop.

In Island County, Master Gardener training takes place once a year running January through March. The  2011 training will be on-line combined with some class time and field trips. Classes are taught by WSU faculty and veteran Master Gardeners. The cost of training is $170.00. All applicants will be interviewed and from among those interviewed 20 will be accepted into training. Those accepted into training agree to volunteer 85 hours of community service over the next two years as Island County Master Gardeners.  NOTE: the 2011 application process for the WSU Extension Master Gardener’s is closed.  Please connect to the link to research and apply for the following years 20 slots.

“BOSTON BLACKIE”

The Boston Blacke radio series began on June 23, 1944, on NBC as a summer replacement for Amos ‘n’ Andy.

The original Boston Blackie, by Jack Boyle, his only book, was written in 1919. The character “Boston Blackie”, real name Horatio Black*, was a young, handsome, well educated, gentleman that loves women and children. However, he is also a hardened criminal, a jewel thief and safe cracker, who’d served time in a California prison. His wife, Mary, is “his best loved pal,” and his collaborator on all his capers. This can be better understood when you realize that the Mary in the Boston Blackie stories has an underworld crook for a father.

FIBBER MCGEE AND MOLLY

Fibber McGee and Molly was a radio show that played a major role in determining the full form of what became classic, old-time radio. The series was a pinnacle of American popular culture from its 1935 premiere until its end in 1959. One of the longest-running comedies in the history of classic radio in the United States, Fibber McGee and Molly has stood the test of time in many ways, transcending the actual or alleged limitations of its medium, form and concurrent culture.  The program struggled in the ratings until 1940, when it became a national sensation. Within three years, it was the top-rated program in America.

CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT

The series had its beginnings in 1938 on Chicago radio station, WGN. Created by Robert M. Burtt and Willfred G. Moore, the creators of The Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen, the series was sponsored by the Skelly Oil Company. The program was syndicated, recorded on 16″ glass discs at a studio in an office building at LaSalle St and Wacker Drive at the ad agency of Blackett, Sample and Hummert.

In the beginning, “Captain Midnight” was simply an undercover name for Jim “Red” Albright, who regularly piloted cargo and passengers. As an undercover agent, Albright was trying to gather information on a gang of criminals. Captain Midnight was constantly trying to stop the plans of the evil Ivan Shark and his daughter Fury. Shark remained as Midnight’s evil nemesis throughout the length of the radio run.

THE ROMANCE OF HELEN TRENT

The Romance of Helen Trent was one of the most beloved of all the old time radio shows, and its loyal fans faithfully followed, year after year, the unending triumphs and heartbreaks of their glamorous star-crossed friend, Hollywood dress designer Helen Trent. Like a good friend, Helen was there for them, sharing her innermost secrets in heartbreaking fifteen-minute slices, for nearly three decades. The grand romance finally ended after over 7, 200 episodes in 1960. In fact, Helen outlived most of network radio!

Carla Jolley, ARNP, MN, AOCN

Gwen was pleased that Carla Jolley could join us on Whidbey Chat today.

With the intent on providing a valuable experience for the KWPA listening audience, and the many people on our island facing tough health care realities, Gwen invited Carla into the KWPA studio to enlighten us about her important work in palliative care.  Palliative care is specialized care focused on the pain, symptoms and stress of very serious illness.

The way Carla approaches her work, how she helps her patient’s, and their families, face necessary and difficult health care decisions, is based in her genuine concern for people and her sincere commitment to proper and ethical palliative care. Carla is easy going, deeply devoted, funny (in the most respectful ways), and not afraid to broach the most difficult topics many of us are unable face, let along navigate.

For those caring for a sick loved one, friend, or client, Carla also had a lot to say about care giving, caregivers and the personal needs people face while caring for someone.
